Difference Between Overbite and Underbite

So what is the difference between overbite and underbite?

An overbite occurs when your upper dental arch overlaps over the lower arch.  A certain overbite is normal and your dentist can help determine if your overbite is not ideal. These conditions are usually inherited from parents, but some habits at a young age can cause more harm such as thumb sucking at childhood, tongue thrusting and extreme use of pacifier or bottle for a prolonged period. Apart from affecting your facial feature, an overbite can cause other issues such as problem chewing, and stress on jaw joint that may lead to wear and tear of jaw bones.

Underbite, on the other hand, is the condition where lower teeth protrude past the upper arch, which can be a result of either undergrowth of the upper jaw or overgrowth of the lower jaw. Like overbite, underbite can also be inherited and few of the other causes are same as an overbite. Additional problems that come along with these dental conditions are problem chewing, tooth decay, gingivitis, cavities etc. Moreover, bad bite makes it difficult for the brush to reach tricky areas, thus causing decay and cavities.

Treating misaligned teeth

Misaligned teeth can be clearly seen but it is recommended you visit a dentist and seek professional help for rectifying malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment is usually recommended and possible jaw surgery as well.
