The temporomandibular joints (abbreviated as TMJ), are the joints and jaw muscles, which make it possible to open and close your mouth. It serves a crucial role in connecting your lower jaw to the skull. You can feel it if you place your finger in front of each ear and open and close your mouth.

No joint in the body is as flexible as the jaw joint. Basically, it has three movement directions:

  • Forward and back
  • Sideways
  • Up and down

What is TMD?

TMD is used as a broad term covering any temporomandibular joint disorder. It is not a single condition, but instead, there are many conditions, which are caused by jaw misalignment. This disorder often results in migraine-like headaches and other painful symptoms, yet remains one of the most commonly overlooked causes of chronic facial, shoulder and neck pain.

If left untreated, TMD can lead to increasingly worsening pain and can also contribute to oral health problems like premature wear of your teeth and periodontal disease. It is vital to know that TMJ is a degenerative disease and does not get better without treatment.

What are the risk factors when TMD is not treated?

A “risk factor” is a condition, which increases your chances of developing a TMD. It is possible to have TMD without any of the risk factors. however this disorder most probably develops when there are one or more risk factors.

Some of the common risk factors for TMJ include:

  • Misaligned bite
  • Jaw deformities
  • Bruxism
  • Bad posture
  • Car Accidents
  • Arthritis
  • Synovitis
  • Jaw or facial injuries
  • Gender

Treating temporomandibular joint disorder:

Your TMJ treatment options depend on the presentation of your symptoms. In many cases, the symptoms of TMJ can be relieved by creating a nighttime grinding appliance to help protect the teeth, muscles and jaw joints from the forces of nighttime grinding.
